Skyweka’s race on Saturday 3rd June is Weather Dependant

Skyweka[1]Keep a watch out for Skyweka this week – she will be racing at Ellerslie if the weather and track conditions improve.  Trainer Tony Pike does not want to run her on a heavy track and we are with him all the way with that decision.  Skyweka  will get every opportunity if the track is not heavy, but the northern rainfall has been very consistent this Autumn, much to the disappointment of the hard working team at Pike Stables.

View Skyweka before she heads out for a 1000m gallop on the grass with her mate this morning.  As you can see – very wet underfoot – we need sunshine folks

And here she is having a workout on the misty track

As you will know from Tony’s interview, he wants to give Skyweka a short 1200m race to kick start this campaign.   Here are today’s nominations.

Ellerslie nominations May 2017

My question to you is this!  Is there a subversive element causing the consistent rainfall all over the country?  The evidence below points to this very thing!  Yes folks, these  guys have been heard chanting and can you believe it – radio stations have been playing their tunes!  Can we blame the rainfall on Phil?  wishing it would rain down – shut up Phil and what about that chap Travis below, well he  should buy a rain coat or move away from the Waikato if he wants an answer to that question!

Thank God for the glass half full Weka’s all over the country, who are aggressively seeking assistance for weather improvements even to the point of offering sacrifices to the rain gods. Paparazzi caught a glimpse of Galloping Weka JPW taking her job very seriously.  She was spotted recently doing some kind of ceremonious dance on the rocks and it was reported she was also singing (off key) … ‘Don’t let it rain on Skyweka’s parade this week….”

Good luck team Weka – more reports this week

Galloping Weka talks to the Galloping Wekas – Les Wallace having a chat with Starweka , alongside Morweka and Skyweka await their turn

Galloping Weka’s Les and Janine Wallace had a great visit to Tony Pikes stables on Monday 22nd May.  Team Pike got all the horses up for them to have a look at and stable-hand Emma – pictured below with Morweka,  ensured they got a good look at the fillies before they headed off to eat their lunch.  We then had a great chat with Tony about each filly.

There will be a lot of Weka events happening over the next few weeks will all three fillies preparing to race – depending on the trace surfaces. Here’s hoping the weather will stay calm for a bit so that we can collect some of NZTR’s stakes money.

Starweka’s debut at the Taupo Trials May 2017

Les and I went to visit all three Weka fillies at Cambridge this week.  At the time of writing this we were still in transit, so a full update of our visit will be posted when we get home later in the week.

Starweka 22 May 2017

Today – 23rd May 2017 was a momentous day for Starweka as she made her debut on the track contesting a trial at Taupo.  The Jockey on board was Vinnie Colgan

Taupo Trials

The trial can be viewed here:

Starweka’s first trial – view at 4.38

Tony’s report is as follows:

Starweka (Showcasing [GB]/Blue Hope) :

She has had a good experience in her first trial at Taupo today. She has jumped reasonably well and settled just behind midfield in her trial. The heat was run at at a solid tempo and had some smart trial performers in it. On straightening Vinnie has eased her to the outside and she has fought on well to be beaten around five lengths. She was strong past the post and was one of the last to pull up.  Today’s trial was very much for experience and she will take a lot of natural improvement from it. She has a very good action which is my only concern going into the winter months as I do think she will appreciate a reasonable surface.

She will need another barrier trial for education before being ready to race. I will see how she pulls up in the next few days before deciding where she will trial next. Hopefully we have some kind weather over the next couple of weeks and can trial again on a good surface.

We also caught up with Morweka and Skyweka at the stables – that update will be posted  when we touch base later in the week

Another great day – Starweka learnt a lot and is gaining experience
